Hi, I am running for the position of Chair-Elect in the California Section of the American Chemical Society. The following statement is my election ballot statement.

Ballot Statement:

In a world of fascinating chemistry, we have some work to do. I will elaborate in greater detail at www.neal.byington.org. Briefly, I am running for the position of Chair-Elect of the California Section of the American Chemical Society to lead the effort to enable our Section to deliver more direct value to each member. It is you and I and our families who pay for the ACS in so many ways. We need to make ACS more member-friendly and more member-valuable. Our Section has historically done an excellent job of promoting all aspects of chemistry to the local Bay Area community and to science in general. Our substantial operating budget reflects this focus. In my opinion we have done a relatively poor job of serving the immediate professional needs of our dues-paying members. In the current global out-sourcing economy, the way for us to combat global out-sourcing is to directly address the issue of value to the employer per dollar of salary per unit of time. We can increase the efficiency and the value that each chemist contributes to an employer by re-focusing some of our ACS Section activities. We need to put more emphasis upon offering Section activities which provide opportunities for our members to become professionally more valuable chemists.
